Earwax is produced by glands in the outer ear canal. Its purpose is to trap dust and other small particles and prevent them from reaching and potentially damaging the eardrum.

Normally, the wax dries up and falls out of the ear along with any trapped dust or debris. There are a lot of patients that have ear wax accumulation, this is a common problem. Depending on the amount it may decrease your hearing in affected ear. For some patients this will be a problem that requires ongoing treatment.

You may try a few earwax removal methods at home unless you have a perforation (hole) or tubes in your eardrum, then only drops or instructions given by your physician should be used.

Over-the-counter wax softening drops such as Debrox, Murine, or hydrogen peroxide may be put into the affected ear and then allowed to drain out after about 5 minutes. If you use hydrogen peroxide, it is recommended that it be mixed with warm water and then inserted into the ear with a blue bulb syringe. This is usually done over the course of about 5-7 days.

Colace (Docusate Sodium) (a stool softener) in liquid formulation can also be used in the ear like ear drops to dissolve ear wax. It can produce substantial ear wax disintegration within 15 minutes. It is usually best to use these drops prior to a bath or shower so the ears can be washed after use.

NeilMed ClearCanal Ear Wax Removal Kit was designed to soften, loosen, and wash out earwax. This sterile, preservative-free complete kit is safe and natural and made to clear out wax build up. Apply 10 drops per ear, plug ears for 10 minutes, rinse each ear for 10 seconds, use designed cup to allow the drainage fluid to be captured and reduce spilling over clothing or body.

If you have an appointment to be seen by your doctor, start the ear cleaning drops the week before your appointment if recommended.

Never put Q-tips into the ear canal, this can push the ear wax deeper into the ear by the ear drum, which will be more sensitive to take out. Use only a wash cloth.
