The Best Turf Toe Brace for Prevention and Treatment
Turf toe can be painful and frustrating, majorly if you are an athlete. But most people make a full recovery within a few weeks without any long-term health problems. To avoid future reoccurrences, make sure to give your injured toe plenty of rest and wear a brace to help prevent further damage.
This Turf Toe Brace is a new and improved alternative to traditional taping techniques, alleviating pain and limiting movement of your toe while it heals.
Causes and Symptoms: What is Turf Toe?
“Turf toe” received its name because this injury is especially common among athletes who play on artificial turf. When playing sports on artificial turf, cleats can cause your foot to stick to the hard surface, resulting in jamming of the big toe joint. There has been some proof that less-supportive, flexible shoes worn on artificial turf are also to blame. Although this injury is most commonly reported in football players, participants in soccer, basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, running or track, dance (especially ballet), and martial arts are at risk too.
What Causes Turf Toe?
Your forefoot is made up of long metatarsal bones which connect to the phalanges bones (toes). The point where the metatarsals attach to the phalanges is called the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. The bones are joined together by ligaments, a short band of tough, fibrous connective tissue.
Turf toe is a sprain to the ligament at the base of your big toe or great toe. The overstretched or torn ligament is a result of excessive upward bending (hyperextension) of your big toe joint. It is caused by jamming or repetitive injury when pushing off your toe repeatedly while running or jumping.
Turf Toe Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of turf toe often include pain, swelling, and limited joint movement.
If your turf toe was caused by repetitive motions, the indications will usually begin slowly and may gradually worsen. If direct injury is the cause, signs and symptoms typically begin suddenly and get worse over a 24-hour period. An X-ray or MRI scan is usually recommended to check that no fracture or break is present.
How Long Does Turf Toe Take to Heal
Turf toe typically takes about 3 to 6 weeks to fully heal. The more severe your sprain is, the longer you will need to allow for recovery. This soft splint is intended for turf toe prevention and protection while recovering from grade 1 or “mild” sprains.
Sprains are classified into grades based on how severe they are. Your doctor will determine if your sprain is:
- Grade 1. Your ligament has some minor tearing, known as micro-tearing.
- Grade 2. Your ligament is partially torn.
- Grade 3. Your ligament is severely or completely torn and you have significant joint instability.
As with other sprains, treatment involves following the steps of rest, ice, apply compression and elevate (RICE). For grade 1 sprains, try to keep your toe braced for about four weeks, though your doctor can give you more specific guidelines. As you recover, it is also important to avoid sports or strenuous exercise. In more severe cases, a cam walking boot may be necessary.
If you ignore this injury it may develop into hallux limitus or hallux rigidus, which is a stiff joint with a decreased range of motion due to arthritis around the joint.
Taping your big toe can be an annoying, painful, and expensive process over time. This reusable brace is easier to apply, more convenient, and more comfortable than medical tape from CVS or Walgreens.
Similar to turf toe taping techniques, this bandage works to alleviate pain and discomfort reducing hyperextension of the big toe while reinforcing your ligaments and joints.
While bracing and taping works well for grade 1 sprains, grade 2 or 3 sprains might require wearing a walking boot to provide added protection and stability. Remember, it is important to check with your doctor first to make sure you are following the best treatment option for your injury.
Key Features and Benefits of This Soft Turf Toe Splint
-
Soft Design
With comfort and usability in mind, this brace was designed in a soft style. It is intended to be worn all day, every day as you heal from your injury. The flexible, great toe brace is more comfortable than a carbon fiber foot plate insert or steel shoe insole extension orthotic. It limits excessive flexion (bending) while allowing for a comfortable range of motion, so do not be worried if you can still move your foot!
If you have not worn foot braces, pads, or sleeves in the past, it will take you some time to get used to having something on your foot. After adjusting to the bandage you will probably forget you are even wearing it.
The midfoot band and toe cap (toe sleeve) of this brace are made of perforated neoprene fabric, which is breathable and lightweight. The toe straps are made of durable polyester with medical-grade fasteners, ensuring a stronghold throughout the day.
Due to its soft design, this may or may not be the right turf toe remedy for high-impact sports. Talk to your doctor about your specific injury.
