Please note:  This presentation contains information about the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Target Audience: This training is intended for civil surgeons and their medical staff in Washington State who complete medical examinations of applicants seeking to adjust their immigration status in the United States.  

Training Goals: 

• Articulate the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC’s) TB Elimination goal and describe current progress in achieving TB elimination in the United States and in Washington State
• Identify gaps in current TB prevention efforts and ways in which clinicians can contribute to TB elimination in Washington State
• Strengthen the capacity of civil surgeons in Washington State to complete medical examinations of applicants seeking to adjust their immigration status in the United States

Training Objectives (partial list): 

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Discuss the immigration process and the medical examination of applicants seeking to adjust their immigration status in the United States, including the laws and policies governing the examination and CDC’s Technical Instructions for the Medical Examination of Aliens in the United States, which specify the examination requirements
• Explain the roles of civil surgeons, the CDC, USCIS, and the local health department in the medical clearance process for applicants seeking to adjust their immigration status in the United States
• Correctly and accurately complete the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, including the TB, Syphilis, Physical or Mental Disorders Associated with Harmful Behavior, Drug Abuse/Drug Addiction, and Vaccination sections of the form
• Describe the role of physicians, the CDC, and local health departments in the prevention and control of TB to benefit patients and communities in Washington State
• Identify when, where, and how to refer applicants for LTBI follow-up for optimal treatment
• Describe the current recommended treatment options for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and the advantages versus disadvantages, to inform appropriate use in clinical practice
• Understand the differences between vaccinating the general population and vaccinating applicants seeking to adjust their immigration status in the United States

Board requirements prevent us from offering CE credit to people who arrive more than 15 minutes after the start of the training, or leave the training early. Therefore, partial credit will not be awarded.
