I am referring to the Original and Peppered varieties. Is this stuff ok every once in a while in a pinch. On long road trips that I occasionaly take for concerts and what not its hard to pack certain foods i eat like yogurt, cottage cheese and meats. I have my Metabolic Drive but given the choice I prefer a solid source of protein.
The ingredients don’t list any odd hydronated oils or anything like that. The only things wrong with it from what I understand is the extremely high sodium content and the 3 grams of sugar per serving (3 servings per package)
Is this stuff an ok source of protein every once in a while or should I just put it on the avoid list and forget about it?

John Berardi is the man to go to for nutrition advice. If he is eating it then it must be ok.

Just make sure you’re getting enough H2O if you’re ingesting large amounts of sodium.

I’m aware of JB’s work and I’ve read that article before. What I’m asking is if this particular brand of jerky nutritional. As I know alot of packaged stuff like this contains not so physique friendly ingredients.

You should be fine if you’re eating it every once in a while. If its your main protein source, well, then it might pose a problem.
That said, the “Messin’ with sasquatch” are some of the funniest commercials on TV.
mthomps 5
Haha, hell yeah man. Those commercials are awesome.
I figure if it’s every now and then, I really don’t see a problem, especially if you’re not on a strict diet. However, that said, instead of buying a thing of beef jerky, maybe pack yourself a sandwich in a ziplock bag or something? Same amount, probably a lot less sodium, cheaper, and healthier too. Just a suggestion.

Bread = bad on a fat loss diet. Which is what I’m attempting atleast :-/
ah, I see. my suggestion is no good. hmm, what exactly are the nutritional facts of a package of jack links?

Again, I’m not asking if it should be a staple in a diet. Rather something that you can have every now and then as a treat/quick meal in a pinch.
P.S. I ate a pack today. Decided to let today be my first day i wasnt calorie restricted and didnt count them. Also didn’t monitor when i ate my carbs or fats, but ate all clean food.
Right back to my hypocaloric intake first thing tommoro though.
if you’re eating the jerky as a random snack every now and then, I don’t see much of a problem with it. if you’re fine with the sodium and caloric content, go for it, just drink water. if your diet isn’t strict, I don’t see how it would hurt every now and then.
There are jerky’s with less sugar, less carbs.

Agreed – but these things are EVERYWHERE (at least in the midwest). I use this stuff myself. Probably not the best jerky that money can buy, but I figure it is better than nothing if you are getting up past 2 or 3 hours since your last meal. Far better than junk.
I’ve been toying with the idea of making my own jerky – but haven’t gotten around to it. Maybe nice project for the holidays.

Only thing that worries me about Jerky is the MSG. If anyone knows of any (short of making your own) brands that don’t put MSG in the jerky, I’m in the market for that.
As has already been mentioned, the issue w/ salt can be neutralized by drinking more water. The sugar content though, is another issue. I would go w/ protein in a shaker bottle and some nuts. I’m sure you’ve thought about this, but if you are really on a strict fat loss diet you should worry about the sugar if its a recurring protein source.
thats my 2 cents

I have a buddy who hunts and his mom constantly makes deer jerky out of the deer they get. If i can get my hands on some would this stuff be considered a great lean protein source?
To my knowlegde they cook it just how it is without adding any sugars and stuff.

How can anyone ask if a ‘snack’ that carries a 4:1 ratio of protein to carbs be bad? How can anyone try to rationalize that in a ‘pinch’ it may be okay?
Why is a heavy water intake neccessary?
For 99.9% of the people, 99.9% of the time, their is absolutely no problem AT ALL with this type of food.

Trader Joe’s sells buffalo jerky for 4.99 (3.5 servings). No MSG, little salt, and tastes great. FYI.

I was really hoping you were going to comment on the “messin with sasquatch” commercials.
I’m minorly disappointed.
