There may be times when you need support from a professional. If you are feeling like you are struggling emotionally you can contact your GP for a referral to an NHS counsellor.  If you need support with your child you may be referred to your local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).  However, there can be long waiting times for these services and the provision is often time-limited.  Other options are outlined below under Organisations or Private Practitioners.

Cardiff & The Vale Health Board
Psychologically informed Early Years’ Service for children with Global Developmental Delay (emerging learning disabilities) and their families.    This is a long established service that primarily has offered ‘Portage’ (child development advice) to parents of children with Global Developmental Delay. However, we have now expanded, in the acknowledgement that such parents and families typically also require emotional and social support.  We have therefore just recruited an in house counsellor as a means of developing a more holistic service. If you feel you would like to speak to our psychological therapist for ‘counselling’ or just any kind of emotional support (even if you feel there is no one you could possibly share your experiences with) then please call us on  07973215925  or email [email protected] and we will respond as soon as we are able to.

It will help us if you let us know some information about your child’s global developmental delay, their name and something about why you feel you want to talk to someone but feel free to keep this as vague as you feel necessary to take care of yourself. We will then ask the psychological therapist- Alice, to give you a call at a time that is convenient to you and you can go from there.
